Menjangan Besar is the second-largest island in the Karimunjawa archipelago, about 10–15 minutes by boat from the harbour, and home to the island’s best-known attraction: a shark sanctuary and breeding pool run in partnership with Karimunjawa National Park.
The pool holds docile reef shark species that are safe to swim alongside under a guide’s supervision, and the site also includes a turtle breeding area, coral reef fish pools, and a wide stretch of white sand beach for those who’d rather watch from the boardwalk than get in the water. Guides ask visitors not to touch the sharks or other marine life and to follow the marked zones, keeping the experience safe for both people and animals.
